Before buying, consider the following questions:
- When was the last annual inspection?
- Are ALL A.D.’s complied with?
- Is there damage history on the aircraft? If so was it properly repaired by a certified A&P? There are many “patch” jobs done that are not even legal!
- Are there any liens against the aircraft? Some owners are not even aware they have a lien on their plane.
- What financing is available? Finding a good aircraft lender is the best investment you can make.
- Insurance? Rates vary greatly based on a number of factors. What ratings and certificates are held, PIC time, fixed gear or retractable, if it is a high performance aircraft or not, 2,4 or 6 place, and time in make and model you are trying to get insurance on.
- What kind of avionics does it have? Some avionics manufactures are clearly superior to others.
- What is the airframe time and what does that number really mean? Higher airframe times generally have less value in the market, however some aircraft with 8,000 hours are in far better flying condition than ones that have only 3,000 or 4,000 hours. Planes are meant to fly, not sit on the ground! If they are well cared for they can fly for a long time!
Many mechanics will attest that they perform annuals on several aircraft that the only time on the hobbs for the previous annual is the taxi time to and from their hanger! This is clearly the type of aircraft to avoid.
